When the fleet arrived on July 17th in the French port of St. Nazaire, the crew experienced an earthquake but was able to make it to port. The voyage turned out to be a productive learning and research opportunity for the crew. While the crew was in the South Pacific the ship collected weather data and oceanographic data as well as samples of marine organisms. We also collected samples of microbial and autochthonous communities in the ship’s water system. All this data is being analyzed and studies will be presented at scientific meetings this summer. We were especially interested in coastal microbes and their role in sustaining coral reefs. The microbes in our water system are particularly impacted by recent extreme weather events, as seen in the typhoon last year and the earthquake this year. In addition to weather extremes, the crew also responded to human catastrophes, which included finding the body of a Vietnamese fisherman and rescuing a French shipwrecked crew member from the South Pacific.
